The Rivierenbuurt is part of Plan Zuid. Berlage’s plan was approved in 1917, and much of the neighbourhood was built between 1917 and 1935 with broad avenues, squares, water and coherent building blocks.
The Berlagebrug, Vrijheidslaan and the Wolkenkrabber on Victorieplein are visible reminders of that plan. Behind them are portiek buildings where several residents share an entrance, stairwell or rear façade.
